Gynecomastia

What is Gynecomastia?

Men may experience an increase in breast size alone due to a variety of reasons. Removal of glandular tissue in combination with liposuction will result in a more symmetrical and smoother chest. Many will find they are then more comfortable and feel more confident in their clothing.

Signs of Gynecomastia

If you have signs of swelling or enlargement in breast size, including pain, tenderness, or nipple discharge, then you may be a candidate for a gynecomastia related surgery procedure. Consultation with Dr. Cohn will help you decide if this is necessary for your situation.

Procedures

In the event of chronic gynecomastia, surgery is often the only treatment option left. There are typically two procedures used to treat chronic gynecomastia: simple liposuction where breast fat alone is removed and the breast gland tissue is left intact, or a mastectomy in which the breast gland tissue is removed. Mastectomies are typically done on an endoscopic basis, requiring only minor incisions and far less recovery time.

What Happens After Male Breast Reduction?

A tube may be inserted in the wound area to help fluid drain from the wound as it heals. Bandages or dressings may be attached to the wound to help it heal. A support garment may be worn to decrease swelling and bruising.  The incisions should heal within a few days, and the dressings may be removed. Changes may not be immediately apparent, but should become clearer as swelling dissipates over the next few weeks. The incision lines should continue to fade for up to six months. Some complications include pain, infection, poor wound healing and asymmetric healing.
